It is well-known that the cultivation of grapevines is not only a science, but an artform as well. Wine is an expression of culture and respect that has been passed down from generation to generation, since the actions taken to guarantee the best product must be assertive in accordance with the seasons, humidity, and even altitude. It is this last detail that surprises about Bodega Catena Zapata since its crops are located almost 1500 metres above sea level.

Bodega Catena Zapata has a history of just over a century, but it was not until the 1990s when their iconic Adrianna Vineyard was planted. Since then, this vineyard continues to be one of the most studied, as it was considered impossible for grapevines to mature in this terroir, and it is this revolutionary strategy that has led their wines to be recognized throughout the world and elevate the Argentinian wine industry.

Popular winemaker Robert Parker Jr., who runs the publication Wine Advocate, has awarded the maximum score of 100 points to two wines from the aforementioned vineyard, these being El Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Gualtallary 2013, a delicate blend of 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Malbec, and the Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard River Stones Malbec 2016, which comes from a particular plot, since its soil has been formed by materials deposited by water currents and the stones found there provide a system of drainage and mitigation from abrupt climate changes.

The excellence of Catena Zapata wines is due to a wide variety of factors. In addition to studies by the research department, Catena Institute of Wine, involved in the wine-making process, the hours of sunlight and light intensity create an ideal environment for photosynthesis, allowing for the development of aromas and tannins and a balance between acids and sugars, thus avoiding the use of additives. These are the factors that have strengthened Catena Zapata’s philosophy that “the best things in life arrive by chance.”

Bodega Catena Zapata has obtained several awards around the world, such as being named The World’s Most Admired Wine Brand in 2020, a first for an Argentinian winery. This has put the spotlight on Argentinian wines, demonstrating the quality and authenticity that has revolutionised, and will continue to leave its mark on the wine industry.
