Sound is a component rare to find in watches, however, it’s an integral part of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s design and artisanal craft. This 2021 marked a year-long celebration of this art in the form of a special exhibition presented in China and South Korea. The exhibition, open to the public, now comes to New York City to allow a new public to explore the rich heritage of chiming watches in a beautiful homage to the Vallée de Joux home where Jaeger-LeCoultre was born.
The exhibition leads us through the 188-history of Jaeger-LeCoultre, featuring unique timepieces from both historic and contemporary collections, along with exclusive, never-before-seen documents and artifacts that serve as a Jaeger-LeCoultre chronicle. The exhibition records the evolution of chiming watches from the very conception of the Maison up to the 2020 models.

The journey starts with the earliest chiming masterworks, some which have never been shown to the public before. The whole trip through the Jaeger-LeCoultre history highlights technical inventions that have earned the Maison the title of “the watchmakers’ watchmaker” and reveal the inner workings of the House’s most impressive chiming works.
As an adequate complement to this exhibition, and expanding the dialogue between haute horlogerie and art, lies a “sound sculpture” installation by Swiss artist Zimoun. The piece aptly captures the universe of sound by employing raw materials and industrial elements and watch parts. This piece redefines the limits of traditional sculpture, sound, and movement, with mundane materials taking a new meaning through their contextualization in the Jaeger-LeCoultre world.
The Sound Maker exhibition will be presented from September 21st through October 5th at 70-74 Gansevoort in New York City, with tickets available to the public upon reservation from 11 am to 7pm Monday through Friday and 10am to 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
